The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is a worldwide network of judges and lawyers united in affirming international law and rule of law principles that advance human rights.
We are seeking to recruit an International Associate Legal Adviser who will be responsible for implementing the ICJ’s programme in Thailand. The ideal candidate will be a dedicated human rights lawyer with a strong knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law, and practical experience of human rights legal advocacy. The position is based at the ICJ’s regional office in Bangkok.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reporting directly to the International Legal Adviser for Thailand and working closely with the rest of the team in the Asia & Pacific Regional office and counterparts in other ICJ offices, the International Associate Legal Adviser has the following responsibilities:
- Implement all aspects of the ICJ's Thailand Programme, using the full range of innovative ICJ advocacy strategies and legal interventions, including conducting field research related to law and justice, preparing legal reports, memos and court submissions, conducting trial observations, conducting capacity building and training programmes for partners;
- Monitor and analyse legal developments concerning human rights and the rule of law in Thailand, with particular focus on the justice system;
- Represent the ICJ externally, which includes engaging in advocacy activities and building active relationships with NGO partners, the Thai judiciary, relevant Government agencies including the Ministry of Justice, academics and the wider human rights community in Thailand.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have:
Education & Experience
- University degree in law. Advanced degree in international human rights law or international humanitarian law highly desirable;
- Progressive international experience as a human rights lawyer and practical legal and advocacy experience at the national and international level working for the implementation of international human rights standards;
- Experience working in Thailand is desirable.
Essential Skills
- Good knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law and international and regional human rights jurisprudence;
- Strong analytical skills;
- Strong planning and organizational skills;
- Communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills;
- Openness and flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing priorities and needs;
- Fluency in English with proven legal writing and editing skills. Working knowledge of Thai or Malay is desirable;
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
