Thailand: Internship: WASH & Gender

The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme, Young Child Survival and Development (YCSD) Section, UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office is seeking a qualified intern to support in developing advocacy materials on Gender and WASH, as part of Regional Office efforts to strengthen Knowledge Management.

General background:

Gender is an important cross-cutting area in WASH; poor WASH has significant impact on the lives of women / girls in communities and schools. Gender is one of the key areas under the current Strategic Plan (2014-2017) and the Gender Action Plan provides opportunities to strengthening gender focused programming in WASH.

The specific project will focus on assisting the section in preparing country profiles on Gender and WASH, aiming to highlight identifying specific barriers and innovations to improve gender sensitive *WASH in Schools (WinS)*programme.

Scope of work:

a) Develop a work plan with time line to accomplish the task in close coordination with YCSD,
Programme, Monitoring and Evaluation (PME) sections and Gender Working Group.

b) Review the available data sources including JMP reports, annual reports, country updates on Gender Action Plan, country WASH in Schools profiles, programme reports from countries including human interest stories and research projects.

c) Develop a draft lay-out of simple country level ‘tracker / dash board" – using examples of existing trackers and using the Monitoring for Results (MoRES) dimensions1, solicit feedback and finalize template; this may include developing a remote survey for inputs from country offices.

d) Coordinate with country offices for missing/additional information and develop draft country profiles for sharing at Regional Office level and individual countries.

e) Develop a regional or multi-country overview of gender and WASH initiatives, including developing:

  • A few selected case studies.
  • An infographic, or a summary visual of some key issues in the region.
  • Entries to the WASH section of the SharePoint site

End Product(s):

Regional analysis / overview of Gender in WASH – status and bottlenecks

Documented case examples of approaches/innovation on Gender in WASH implemented in the region.

Updates on MS Share Point site for WASH

Estimated Duration:

The internship will be for a period of 2.5 to 3 Months.

Duty station is Bangkok (Combination of office-based and Home-based work arrangement.)

Qualifications or Specialized Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school, preferable in Public Health or related field. (Applicants enrolled in an undergraduate school must have completed at least two years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an undergraduate degree).
  • Have good academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Strong aptitude in learning and researching, and managing information is required.
  • Comfortable in using new IT software, platforms, communication and knowledge management tools.
  • High caliber and demonstrated skills in infographic presentation.
  • Demonstrable skills in analyzing large set of data, interpersonal and communication;
  • Good command in using written and spoken English;
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Additional consideration will be given for any past work experience.
  • Ability to perform a variety of administrative tasks.
  • Able to adapt and work in a multicultural setting.
  • Strongly committed to the values and principles of the UN and UNICEF’s mission, guiding principles and Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Conditions of Intern:

a) Expenses: Intern does not receive any financial assistance. Costs and arrangements for travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibilities of the Intern.

b) Visa: Intern is responsible for obtaining the necessary entry visa and arranging their travel to Bangkok. UNICEF/EAPRO will assist only in issuing documents required in visa processing.

c) Health/Medical insurance: Intern is required to hold valid health/accident insurance. UNICEF accepts no responsibilities for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship whether on or off UNICEF premises.

d) Employment: There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.
