General Background

TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, is a joint programme of WWF and IUCN-The World Conservation Union, working to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. TRAFFIC actively monitors and researches wildlife trade and provides its information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes.

Purpose of Job:

The researcher will be responsible for the collection and input of information in an accurate and consistent manner into TRAFFIC’s iBase system. Data collected will enable the production of informative analysis at a later state. Regular research will be required to ensure all information being reported is verified (where possible) and captured centrally. Information is to be researched as much as possible to ascertain the full circumstances of the situation. To enhance our understanding and to further our efforts a data entry personnel is required so that the analyst can focus on producing meaningful and actionable intelligence analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Undertake training as an iBase user to enable the systematic input, research of data and the creation of entities. This will enrich the depth and breadth of information on iBase and enhance our understanding of the illegal trade at a national and regional level.
  • Collect and compile media stories in relation to incidents of poaching, seizures, arrests and investigations in Thailand for input onto iBase. Verification on as many of these instances as possible with regional TRAFFIC / WWF office and other NGOs in the region.
  • Collect, verify, input and report to enforcement agencies where possible information received via the Wildlife Witness app.
  • To enable the consistent monitoring of cases, research and follow up is required to track progress of investigations.
  • All data input onto iBase must be complimented with further research online with internal TRAFFIC / WWF staff and external NGOs
  • Collect and compile information regarding trade related enforcement actions, including arrests and convictions in Thailand. All information pertaining to illegal trade is to be researched and entered into iBase.
  • Further research online identifying emerging modus operandi, locations of concerns, and arrests of groups / organised crime groups in relation to any type of illegal wildlife trade in the region and entered onto the database. This will enable associations and the identification of cross overs with other crime types.
  • Seek information from other NGOs working in the region and gather information, research and input from newsletters.
  • All information input onto to iBase is to be accurately geocoded to enable mapping exercises at a later stage.
  • Requirements:
  • Familiarity with and an interest in conservation;
  • Experience with the collection and collation of data;
  • Sound IT skills, particularly Excel;
  • An eye for detail and a keen interest and ability to recognise and uncover connections between data are a must;
  • Fluency in English and Thai with excellent English writing skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team as well as independently, with respect for and sensitivity to multi-cultural approaches;
  • Independent thinker and showing initiative in developing innovative approaches.
