DEPDC/GMS is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation headquartered in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai, Thailand. The organisation works to prevent young girls and boys from being trafficked into exploitative working conditions such as commercial sex work and forced labour. DEPDC/GMS does this by providing education, protection, community outreach and youth leadership development to at-risk individuals.
Since its inception in 1989, DEPDC/GMS has welcomed volunteers from all over the world. Volunteers are essential to DEPDC/GMS as they share their experiences, expertise, skills and culture to help run the projects and contribute to the organization’s growth. Volunteers also gain international experience, develop new relationships, and partake in rewarding and meaningful work. It is a fulfilling experience for all involved - one that creates memories for a lifetime!
Position: Male or Female Volunteer
Location: Mai Sai, Chiang Rai, Thailand
Duration: Normally we ask for a minimum six months commitment. However, if volunteers have a special skill set we may be able to accept them for a shorter term, so please inquire.
Start date: For 6 month positions please apply at least 1-2 months before the start date.
Pay: This is an unpaid volunteer position. The volunteer must fully fund their flight, visa, accommodation, food, and other necessities while living in Mae Sai.
What do volunteers at our Mae Sai site do exactly? Below is a list of the most common areas volunteers work in but any and all projects and ideas are welcomed!
- Teaching English
- Coordinating Visitors
- Writing Grant Proposals and Reports
- Writing Blog Posts and Other Forms of Social Media
- Attending Events and Meetings
- Helping in Other Areas Based on Skill Set
- International Networking and Communication
DEPDC/GMS requires a volunteer commitment of at least six months in addition to a two-to-four week language course prior to arrival if the applicant does not speak Thai. These course may be completed online or at one of the many language learning centres in Thailand. Exceptions are made in rare cases if the applicant has outstanding skills or previous volunteer experience. All volunteer positions are self-funded. DEPDC/GMS does not provide housing, transportation or a living stipend nor does it charge you a participation fee. However, full support and assistance is provided by staff members locating housing/apartment, renting motorbike (if desired), and orienting you to living and traveling in Mae Sai. Previous volunteers have financed their volunteerism with private fundraisers.
