Community Officer, Girl Effect University - Based in Kampala
Mercy Corps has been operating in Uganda since 2006 and works to catalyze change makers within the Ugandan private sector, civil society and government to create economically dynamic, healthy and secure communities. Our works focus on building resilience and enable economic growth, improve opportunities to attain better health and nutrition, and improved governance and conflict management. We implement programs in the Karmaoja and Acholi sub regions with funding from USAID, USDA, Walmart Foundation, Nike Foundation, SDC, and DFID.
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
Girl Effect University (GEU) is a thriving global network of development practitioners who deliver solutions that meet the unique needs of adolescent girls. Managed by Mercy Corps, it delivers learning experiences and access to a vibrant learning community to catalyze change.
Mercy Corps seeks a Community Officer to successfully nurture, build and champion the existing global GEU Community, as well as build out the local community in Uganda through both online and offline engagement strategies.
A community Officer is the connector, facilitator and advocate for the community. This position requires someone who is a part of the community and who facilitates conversations and connections among members, represents GEU within the community and simultaneously serves as the voice of the community within Mercy Corps and responds to issues, questions, needs and opportunities with honesty, humor, humility and humanity.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
o Proactively listen to and connect with individual community members and build trust among the community as a whole.
o Cultivate a community culture of safety, collaboration, learning and support.
o Cultivate and nurture a team of girl technical advisors and a team of meetup leaders
o Recommend community connections by serving as "matchmaker" for network members, as well as linking opportunities and resources that might benefit their work.
o Create and manage communications and production calendar, developing and distributing relevant, compelling content to share with and invite conversation around.
o Manage the online community platform and oversee content management, knowledge management, discussion moderation and overall engagement.
o Promote, manage and support local meetup leaders
o Organize and facilitate conference calls, webinars, in-person events and girl workshops.
o Manage all community-related customer service questions and issues promptly, and work with IT to resolve any technical issues.
o Collect, track, update and manage all member data in the CRM.
o Serve as the liaison between the Mercy Corps, GEU and community members—communicating issues, insights, feedback and opportunities through the appropriate channels.
· Strategic:
o Develop long-term community goals and translate them into work plans and action items
o Develop and refine metrics and assessment tools for measuring the growth and engagement of the community
o Develop clear monthly metrics reports and include recommendations
o Identify, analyze and report on issues, patterns and trends in community activity and growth
o Utilize web analytics, engagement metrics and community champions to inform new product development for the digital platform
o Document and promote community success stories.
o Keep your pulse on trends news, resources, tools and best practices for the adolescent girl focused development community.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- 5-7 years professional experience. Background in gender/girls, youth programming, marketing or community organizing preferred.
- Experience working with diverse, global communities
- Ability to multi-task and problem solve in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated skills in creativity, flexibility and intuitive listening.
- Excellent communicator in a variety of formats: written & spoken; in person and online; one-on-one and individually and ability to figure out new ways to share and connect ideas and information.
- Public speaking/presentation experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to build and maintain positive relationships and foster networks.
- Experience in using online social networking and ICT tools.
- Willingness to travel internationally and domestically up to 20%.
