Background
ECPAT International is a global network of civil society organisations working together to end the sexual exploitation of children through prostitution, pornography and trafficking. It seeks to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free and secure from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation.
The ECPAT network currently has 90 member organisations in 82 countries in all regions of the world. All members are independent organisations or coalitions working against the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). The Secretariat of the Network is based in Bangkok, Thailand.
ECPAT’s capacity to accelerate progress against CSEC requires a stronger and more effective Network, served by a more responsive and unifying Secretariat. The movement requires enhanced global and regional collaboration, greater shared understanding, clarity of direction and a focus on common goals. Successful network development links national, regional and international efforts, with synergies and clear accountability among the different parts of the organisation that bring positive results for children.
Overall Purpose of the Position
Under the supervision of the Head of Advocacy and Communication, the Communication Officer is responsible for developing, and implementing ECPAT International’s on- an offline communication and branding strategies, in support of the organisation’s strategic priorities. This entails supporting coordination across ECPAT thematic programmes as well as with national ECPAT members and regional representatives to ensure messages are aligned and the organisation speaks with one voice.
Primary Tasks
Communication
Develop, execute and monitor ECPAT International’s on and off-line communication strategy and work plans, in alignment with the organisation’s Strategic Directions;
Manage communication around key advocacy and campaign events;
Support the effective management of ECPAT’s website;
Ensure ECPAT International has a strong online presence and effectively uses social media to engage supporters, partners and target decision-makers;
Undertake assessment of trends, social and political change and public interest and factor these variables into an ongoing refinement of the Communication Strategy execution;
Provide technical advice and develop training and training materials to enhance communication capacities of ECPAT Network member groups.
Branding
Ensure the timely production and dissemination of ECPAT visibility materials as well as institutional materials (brochures, annual reports);
Facilitate the design, lay-out and production of all ECPAT publications, in compliance with ECPAT standards and guidelines;
Propose changes to ECPAT Branding Standards and Guidelines in order to ensure they remain relevant and up to date.
Media Relations
Develop and execute a proactive media relations strategy and work plan that will facilitate positive media exposure for ECPAT International and monitor its image in the media;
Update and manage ECPAT’s media contact lists;
As ECPAT’s focal point with the media, establish and maintain positive partnerships with key media outlets at all relevant levels;
Develop media materials (including press releases, Q&As, and opinion pieces) in multiple and appropriate formats (print/broadcast/web), ensuring they are accurately translated and distributed;
Organise media events, including press conferences, interviews and help prepare/brief those who will be representing ECPAT in such events.
Resource Mobilisation Support
Provide technical support in the development and negotiation of high quality funding proposals in support of communication activities;
Provide effective communication support to all ECPAT fundraising activities.
Administration
- Support the Head of Advocacy and Communications in managing, supervising, and evaluating the performance of all consultants and institutions contracted to support communication and media activities;
Qualifications
Essential
Advanced university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, or other related field;
Minimum five years of progressively responsible and relevant professional experience working in the fields of communication, campaigning, or public relations and experience in working in various media formats (photo, audio, video print, and web);
Demonstrable experience in managing digital communication and social media;
Strong track record in media relations;
Methodology and practical application of communication management, communication research, planning and strategy;
Programme, project and budget management;
Proficiency in computer systems, including internet navigations, office applications and interactive digital media;
Fluency in English language (written and verbal); knowledge of French, Spanish, Russian an asset;
Understanding of international human rights monitoring mechanisms, and preferably child rights.
