The Freedom Story seeks a driven, self-motivated candidate as a Communications Intern. This position will strengthen The Freedom Story’s long-term sustainability by developing and engaging current supporters while marketing to new and existing partners through social media platforms. This position will require drive, passion for our mission and excellent written and oral communication skills, high attention to detail, and a high degree of self-direction. A successful candidate will be excited to learn and apply their learning in a real-world environment. This is a great opportunity for anyone seeking cross-cultural work experience. The Social Media Intern will report to the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager in Chiang Rai, Thailand.

About The Freedom Story:

The Freedom Story prevents child trafficking and exploitation through culturally relevant programs, including scholarships, mentorship, and resources for at-risk children in Northern Thailand. These resources empower at-risk Thai students to stay in school, pursue their dreams and break the cycle of poverty and exploitation. We also believe strongly in ethical storytelling, telling dignifying stories that encourage people to become a part of changing our world for the better.

Reports To: Lucy McCray, Monitoring and Evaluation Manager

Timeline: Minimum of 6 months commitment, 1 year preferred. Start date flexible.

Operational Tasks/Responsibilities:

Story Telling

  • Provide transparency between our on-the-ground work and our International donors by generating content for blogs, social media, email newsletters, etc.
  • Serves as internal self-starting reported to capture the stories and news that describes the work of The Freedom Story.
  • Fact check and use research skills to help put the work of The Freedom Story into global and regional perspectives.
  • Build relationships with local and international media to promote the work of The Freedom Story.
  • Develop an understanding for the language and imagery we use to tell story ethically.
  • Generate video content and footage for special international events.
  • Collect visual, audio, video content to be used on Social Media platforms.
  • Assist US staff in managing and maintaining Social Media platforms.
  • Under the direction of the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager and local Thai staff, conduct interviews with scholarship students to collect stories.
  • Research social media best practices to increase the reach of The Freedom Story audience.
  • Improve marketing and social media strategies.

Publish Monthly Newsletters

  • Coordinate with local Thai staff to compile, draft and create monthly newsletters to be published on The Freedom Story website and sent to the US board of directors.
  • Take photos to be used for monthly newsletter and social media. Perform other tasks as necessary.

· Self-Motivated: Able to identify needs and goals and takes imitative to achieve goals without much guidance or supervision.

· Adventurous, adaptable, flexible, independent: Comfortable learning new things, living on your own in a new country, integrates with local culture and people.

General Qualifications and Required Skills:

· Prior work or education experience in communications, media or public relations preferred.

· Knowledge of Adobe Cloud, Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft Suite, etc.

· Strong writing, editing and photography, videography skills.

· Extensive travel experience preferred.

· Comfortable working in a diverse and dynamic environment.

Hours and Work Environment:

· 40 hours per week with some flexibility.

· Vacation time.

Please note: The Freedom Story cannot cover any of the costs or provide a stipend associated with volunteering in Thailand but will provide information on how to get a visa prior to arrival. Fundraising for the position is available through The Freedom Story.
